Service benefit

By purchasing this service you get a real life demonstration of HP OpenView Business Process Insight capabilities, how the technology can be applied to your business, the benefits it offers you, and of course a good understanding of what is required to deploy it in your IT environment. Finally you have the ability to use the OVBPI software and integration work free of charge for a further 60 days. The OVBPI Pilot implementation service consists of 3 phases:

  • The planning phase
Defining the scope and contents of the pilot.

  • The execution phase
    Implementation of the designed pilot.

  • The review phase
Demonstration of the resulting OVBPI pilot implementation and features and review of next steps. Begin 60-day customer trial period.

Phase 1 - The planning phase (starts at least 2 weeks prior to onsite implementation)

This phase starts with a planning team meeting between HP and customer OVBPI stakeholders, and would last approx. 90 minutes in duration. Depending on geographical or other constraints this may be a face-to-face meeting, or it may be conducted over the telephone. The meeting will 1) summarize the purpose and scope of the pilot, and 2) agree what will be created and ensure the necessary prerequisite will be in place for the onsite visit.

The customer stakeholders will comprise the following individuals:
  • Customer's OVBPI champion
  • The business users who will be using the dashboards to monitor their business
  • The application managers (and/or Architect) responsible for the applications that are likely to be integrated to
  • DBA - who can give you a logon to the database that contains the business data (if the data is in a database)
This combined customer and HP "team" will decide:
  • Which business process to monitor
  • What the key steps in the business process are, including a model that achieves a balance between being complex enough to demonstrate the power of OVBPI, yet simple enough that it fits within the scope of the pilot
  • Which key metrics to track
  • Which business data (data sets from which applications) is needed by OVBPI, and how it will be retrieved
  • What level of business data integration can be implemented (Either actual integration to the live IT environment, or taking a copy of live data from a production system, or data from a test machine. If none of this is possible then is it acceptable to use simulated data within a flat text file)

Planning meeting deliverables

The following items/data points must be complete and/or in-hand by the HP Expert prior to completing any pre-implementation work and onsite Execution Phase activities:
  • List of exact business steps to include in monitoring business flow
  • List of exact data sources (the application), ideally 1 data source for simplicity (simpler progression rules), but more if necessary
  • A copy of the data or the data format
  • The list of KPIs (up to 4) the business user would like to see on the dashboard

Customer responsibilities

Team needs to discuss prerequisites that need to be put in place by the Customer:
  • Provide a dedicated PC with the server databases installed. Precise details to be provided during the meeting as these change over time. The PC will need be connected to a LAN
  • Provide a desk with the configured PC, LAN point and telephone will need to be arranged for the HP Expert
  • Identify a host for the entire duration of the visit./li>
  • Provide access to the business data being used by OVBPI needs to be in place. Specifically any remote databases being monitored will need to have their remote access capabilities enabled and a database login and password set up for OVBPI. If no remote databases are being accessed then access to data files or log files will need to be made available
  • Provide access to technical contacts that understand the formats of the business data and how the fields are filled and used by the application will be needed
  • Facilitate a 90-minute meeting booked for all the key personnel on the Friday morning of the week the pilot is undertaken in order to conduct the review session detailed in Phase 3

HP Expert responsibilities

The following describes the post-planning meeting responsibilities for the HP Expert (prior to engaging in the onsite implementation):
  • Define the flow, data and events
  • Develop a mock-up of the open adaptor (using sample or real data)
  • Determine what SQL commands are needed to calculate the KPI results
  • Start customizing the dashboard to show the KPIs and the drill down info
  • Test the flow and the KPIs (using sample, live or mock event data, or the Flow Simulator)
